Howdy Crew,
National Bike Month (May) is just around the corner and there will be a bike related event every single day of the month. To get warmed up, we are hosting some fun events in April as part of Earthdays in the Bluegrass(www.earthdaysinthebluegrass.org). Here is what's going down:
Thursday April 3
We Are Traffic and Return of the Scorcher
10pm Worsham Theater UK Student Center
Two great documentaries about humanity’s greatest invention, the bicycle!
Presented in partnership with Student Center Film Series.
For more information visit: www.tedwhitegreenlight.com/scorcher.htm and
http://www.tedwhitegreenlight.com/cm.htm
Friday April 4th
Share the Road! Group Bicycle Ride
5 pm Woodland Park
Bicycling is by far the best way to get around our campus and our community. It’s a CLEANER, HEALTHIER, CHEAPER, and FASTER way to travel. However, it can be scary and intimidating to get back on a bike if you haven’t been on one in years. Riding in traffic can be stressful stuff too. This ride will begin with a discussion of local bicycling ordinances and will be a great opportunity to gain confidence riding your bicycle on the street. Helmets strongly recommended!
Monday April 21st
Bike Maintenance Workshop
5-7pm North Campus Courtyard
Sponsored by Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library. Learn about the simple tools and techniques that will keep your mighty steed rolling smoothly. FREE FLAT TIRE REPAIR! Hosted by the Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library. www.wildcatwheels.org.
Saturday, April 26
Bike Sculpture Building 11am-4pm Transit Center Parking Area downtown. Part of WRFL FreeKY Fest
The Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library will bring everything you need to make sculptures, jewelry, picture frames, and more. All from reused bike parts!!! Check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/7597628@N05/sets/72157600191726357/ for pictures from last year’s build. For more information contact self.propelled@gmail.com
Sunday April 27
Bike the Bluegrass
1pm-4pm Wildcat Wheels Campus Bike Shop
(Basement of Blazer Hall near corner of MLK and Euclid Ave.)
Easy 20 mile ride in the heart of bluegrass horse country. All are welcome and none will be left behind. Helmets strongly recommended. Some helmets will be provided by Wildcat Wheels. Don’t have a bike but still want to ride? Contact the Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library (wildcatwheels@gmail.com or www.wildcatwheels.org) and reserve one! This is a great way to see some of our state’s most spectacular horse farms and get more comfortable riding your bike as a form of transportation. The tour will be led by experienced local cyclists and followed by a support vehicle in case of emergencies.

Is there still any interest in a bike swap meet? I think it's a really awesome idea and most people could probably use a chance to liquidate some of their bike related junk or pick up some more. _________________ "AK'll light up your chest like ET."

yeah, I believe Bryant is heading it up. Someone mentioned it already being on the Bike Month calendar, and also someone mentioned something about it being held at Third St. Coffee's parking lot...
I definitely have some bike shit to unload... _________________ ------------[] O |

i am. its not going to be at 3rd st. though. I went to talk to the lady who owns it and she was too busy to talk to me, or return my call. So it's going to be at the Void skateshop. With the parking lot that wraps around to maxwell and the inside area it should be more than enough for people who want to sell their old stuff. Should be a good time, and I'm working on a few extra things for people who attend. |

yes and no. We were talking about the Bike the Bluegrass ride, which will be at least 20 miles or so. What you saw was the "Share the Road" ride, which was essentially like the Critical Mass rides we used to have regularly.
I'm willing to bet that after last night's documentaries on Critical Mass, there will be enough inspiration and interest to get them started back up again. |

Yup Brokebike is right... what you saw was the Share the road/get comfortable on the road ride. There were 30 ppl there, it rained the whole time while we waited and while we rode. Rain is not a bad thing, it makes the beer taste better.... we did the victory loop (part of) and then off to Lynaghs for beer and food.
Some folks were talking last night about starting the group ride up again and maybe working on the frame a little more and making it a celebration of the bike/parade....make it more festive and fun. |

It would be awesome to see it going again. Just don't call it "Critical Mass" or you'll have fools coming out thinkin they're in Chicago trying to beat up people for driving cars. |

30 people is a great turnout for a rainy-ass Friday!
Sorry I missed it... sounds like it was a good time. |
