Announcement/Press Release
RALLY AGAINST WRECKLESS LEXINGTON TOW TRUCKS

Who: Lexington walkers, cyclists, UK Students and Friends of Sierra Emrich and Alfie Baker
Where: On the sidewalk in front of LFUCG Division of Police
Main St. and Martin Luther King in downtown Lexington
Wed (Sept 9) from 5-6:00 PM during evening rush hour

Info:

UK student Sierra Emrich was struck by a tow truck while walking with her friend Alfie Baker along Richmond Rd near Idle Hour Center early Monday morning.

According to a Herald Leader news account:

http://www.kentucky.com/latest_news/story/925698.html

"A tow truck struck and injured two pedestrians who were walking along the right shoulder of Richmond Road near Shriners Lane early Monday, police say.

The truck driver was distracted and drifted to the right, and the right side of the truck struck the pedestrians. The accident occurred just before 2 a.m.

Charges are not expected to be filed against the driver, Louis D. Lunsford Jr., 42, of Lexington."

Sierra's arm is broken and her friend Alfie is still in the hospital. He is going to be OK.

Lexington cyclists and pedestrian activists want to know why are no charges being filed against the tow truck driver.

Lexington cyclist Dave Cooper asks: "Is it legal for tow truck drivers in Lexington to hit pedestrians? Why do Lexington tow trucks drive like maniacs all over our town? Who is supposed to be watching them?"

Lexington tow trucks are a public safety menace. They regularly drive above the speed limit; they prey on UK students; they kidnap student cars and hold them hostage, overcharge them and demand cash - and most students feel like they have been badly ripped off after dealing with these companies, because there is no way for them to appeal when their car has been towed in error.

There is little or no accountability of these tow truck operators to the public, and apparently almost no oversight. Apparently, the LFUCG Div. of Police won't press charges even when a tow trucker almost kills two young people.

Division of Police was called today and asked for an answer - but we did not even get a returned phone call.
