Benefits
This is a fundraiser for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth & Seedleaf. Without them we wouldn't have these great community gardens and programs that promote justice & sustainability. Support the organizations that make us a stronger & healthier community.
Alleycat Bike Race Activities
The race starts at London Ferrell Community Garden. You will bike to gardens across town and complete earth-nourishing activities.
* You will get dirty.
* You will need to dismount.
* You will need a small tupperware-like container (pint-sized maximum size) with lid; this will be your garden keepsake. We'll provide everything else.
* You will need a map to precisely locate and navigate to these special gardens.
* You will need a bag to carry your garden and small stuff we give you.
The alleycat will have two courses: a short course for the fun gardener, and a long course for the fast gardener. Both courses are eligible for prizes.
Prizes
Long course will have prizes for first place male & female. Both courses compete for best dressed urban farmer male/female. You might ask, "What qualifies one as an urban farmer?" You just fell off the turnip truck! Well, it's a farmer in the city or overalls with an ipod case or it's custo and straw hats. DFL for the long course will be recognized.
Afterparty Square Dance
Dance under the full moon at the London Ferrell Community Garden with live square dancin' and adult refreshments. Julie Shepherd Powell will call the dance and a house band with lay down the tunes! Some youtube of the performing artists:

I'm sure it will be great. I just won't be living in Lex anymore by then and I am bummed that I will be missing all the fun. |

I know you are and so I humbly introduce: Harvest Moon Alleycat a race you'll probably want to do in overalls.
This is a benefit for KFTC & Seedleaf.

OUR OFFICIAL HEE HAW WEATHER FORECAST
So you're wondering if you'll see the moon Friday night? Yes, you will. The weather system that's poised to enter the Bluegrass Friday morning looks to be a fast mover. We'll initially have some blustery wind, rain, and maybe some thunder, but it all will pass before we start.
7pm conditions:
Temperature: 58 °F
Surface Wind: 11mph from the southwest and a little gusty
Sky Cover: 30%
Rain: <10%

WRAP UP
Thanks to all of the happy hoedowners who participated in the bike race and square dance. It turned out to be a beautiful, chilly night with a fantastic moonrise. We had 75 bike registrants and raised just over $475 in support of Seedleaf and KFTC. We also had numerous walk-in do-si-doers and we had probably 150-200 people there at the height of event.
LIFE IS IN YOUR HANDS
If you're a'wonderin' those seed packets you picked up are for you to plant in your pint of soil. They're fast growing lettuce (3 weeks to harvest) and will grow well in a sunny window or patio, but protect them from washing out if you put them outside.
WINNERS
We made a record! It's the first time that the women whooped up on the men and beat them to them finish line. Obviously the Main St construction and darkness were problems, but the night was about brains as much as brawn.
1rst place Female: Tiffany Morrow & Megan Stanton
1rst place Male: Drew McGraw
Best Dressed Female: Carla Brown
Best Dressed Male: Brian Turner
We gave out 2 Boomslang weekend passes (who are you?). If you received one, you must go to Buster's (starting Friday night 5pm) to swap ticket for a wristband.

BIG THANKS
To Ryan Koch for letting us visit the variety of Seedleaf gardens, making some compost, and planting garlic in London Ferrell. Also to Peace Meal Gardens and Rebecca Glasscock for letting us mulch this fantastic garden. Huge props to Tim Buckingham for bringing the square dance and community exercising. Gotta stay fit ya'll! Last but not least, thanks to all the bikers who came out, dressed up, and partied down. Alleycats rule. |
