I was there. I'd say 30-40 showed, which wasn't bad, considering today's weather. Plenty of kids, a couple bikes, some dogs here and there. Some people even brought signs :) Most importantly, it was DOCUMENTED! |

this issue is really buggin' me, I am sorry that I have been working and trying to reassemble my life, or I would have been involved yesterday. I know there are some political types that post here (the good kind), and I think the angle to work on this is Handicap Accessibility.
I don't know if he is still around, but I used to tend bar for a lawyer confined to a powered chair and if he could not go somewhere, or do something in that chair, he used his skills to force people to change. I don't know the rules, perhaps that only works legally against people in business, but ethically it should work here. Just imagine trying to get through there on a Hoveround.
It bothers me most that we have to argue this point, or picket, or do anything "special" to put a sidewalk past these "special" people in there "special" houses. I commented on the article in the Herald, and I'll say it here, if they don't get a sidewalk, then I will tear mine out in protest. _________________ The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. Regardless of our angle, or how we eventually achieve this (because we will), I agree with you that handicap accessibility is a major issue and should play a significant role in helping us get this sidewalk installed. I hobbled on crutches for a mile in that walk-in last night, and I can now say from experience that not only was I terribly inconvenienced by the terrain, I was endangered! There were points on that walk where I was forced to use the shoulder of the road because the right-of-way wasn't accommodating, and not only did people neglect to slow down, some even honked in disapproval.
Like I said to a news reporter last night, this is bigger than your opinion. This is bigger than my opinion. This issue is about human health and safety. It's about public welfare. We all need to stop pointing fingers and just do what's right. Installing the sidewalk will benefit many, and not installing the sidewalk will benefit few. |
